EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ANDRA MATIN AND EUGENE KANGAWA ON EUGENE MUSEUM BALI

Presents a unique blend of contemporary art and rich traditions, offering a profound aesthetic experience

Following the highly acclaimed solo exhibition "New Sea: After the Rainbow" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the growing expectations and support from various regions and countries propelled the idea of establishing a permanent museum, the "Eugene Museum in Bali."

In a recently released video by the museum, Andra Matin delves into the architectural concept of the building, revealing sketches and providing new insights on the materials to be used. The video also features Eugene, the artist, who shares the journey from the initial concept to the realization of this permanent museum. Their latest interview unveils the creative process and philosophy behind this major project, focusing on the harmony between art, architecture, and the natural beauty of Bali.

The Concept of Eugene Museum Bali

In the interview, Andra Matin elaborates on the architectural vision of the Eugene Museum Bali, highlighting the integration of traditional Balinese elements with a contemporary approach. "My architectural approach is deeply rooted in respect for nature, and I feel a strong connection to Eugene’s works. This project carefully blends art, human behavior, and nature, combining elements that are essential to cosmology," Andra explained.

Located just ten minutes from the iconic Tanah Lot Temple, the museum will organically combine Bali’s local traditions with Eugene’s artworks. Andra also mentioned that the design is based on Bali’s traditional residential system known as Natah. "In Bali, there is a traditional residential system called Natah, which creates communal spaces for relaxation and building community around it. In this project, the communal space will serve as a collaboration between architecture, nature, Eugene’s artworks, and visitors," Andra added.

Local materials and techniques will be prioritized in the museum's construction as a tribute to Balinese culture. Andra hopes that the Eugene Museum Bali will become an important destination for art and architecture lovers. "I hope this museum becomes a place to see outstanding contemporary art and architecture in Indonesia. The collaboration between Indonesian architects and Japanese contemporary artists will create a deep experience through highly refined techniques," he stated.

Eugene Kangawa, in his interview, also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work in Indonesia and be involved in this major project. "It’s truly a pleasure to visit Indonesia and reconnect with friends there. Cross-border initiatives like this are only possible with the support and encouragement of many communities and individuals," Eugene said.

The Japanese artist also shared his hope that this museum will become a significant destination for art lovers worldwide. "I hope this place will be an important destination for everyone involved," he remarked.

A New Contemporary Art Destination in Southeast Asia

The Eugene Museum Bali will be a permanent home for Eugene’s contemplative artworks, often related to natural elements. One of the pieces to be showcased is the White Painting series, which was also featured at Art Jakarta as part of the SPOT special exhibition.

Through this interview, it was revealed that Eugene is deeply thankful for the opportunity to establish a permanent museum in Bali, located at the base of a UNESCO World Heritage site. "The Eugene Museum Bali will not only be a space to enjoy contemporary art but will also offer an immersive experience for visitors, where they can feel the unique collaboration between art, architecture, and the natural beauty of Bali," he shared.

With an architectural concept rooted in Balinese tradition and the strong creative vision of Eugene Kangawa, the Eugene Museum Bali is set to become a significant contemporary art destination, both in Indonesia and internationally. The museum is expected to provide a unique experience for visitors who wish to enjoy the harmony between art, architecture, and the natural beauty of Bali.
