BOURNONVILLE BALLET MARKS 75 YEARS OF INDONESIA-DENMARK DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

A spectacular night of elegance and movement that bridged cultures through the beauty of dance

The Embassy of Denmark in Jakarta presented a ballet performance titled Bournonville Celebration to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Denmark. The prestigious event took place at Usmar Ismail Hall in South Jakarta on Monday, June 30, 2025, serving as a symbol of the growing cultural connection between the two nations through world-class performing arts.

The performance was part of the August Bournonville Summer Academy in Jakarta, a program designed to introduce and preserve the traditional Bournonville ballet style for Indonesian audiences. The academy is led by two highly respected Danish ballet masters, Frank Andersen and Eva Kloborg, known internationally for their dedication to preserving the authenticity and legacy of Bournonville choreography.

As one of the evening’s highlights, the Gala Ballet featured a special performance by Jon Axel Fransson, principal dancer of the Royal Danish Ballet. His remarkable technique and stage presence left a lasting impression on the audience.

In his opening remarks, Denmark’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Sten Frimodt Nielsen, highlighted the longstanding relationship between Indonesia and Denmark, particularly in the fields of arts and culture. He noted, “This year is a special milestone to further strengthen our partnership, and we are proud to support this performance as part of the 75th anniversary celebration of our diplomatic relations.”

The event also included the Indonesian premiere of William Tell Pas De Deux, a duet that beautifully combines classical ballet techniques with the expressive style that defines Bournonville’s work. The audience was also treated to selected scenes from the iconic La Sylphide and other pieces from the Bournonville repertoire, reflecting the elegance, artistry, and storytelling of European classical ballet.

Notably, all the performances were delivered by talented young Indonesian dancers who had undergone intensive training with the Danish ballet masters. Their impressive interpretations of these classic works brought a unique local touch to the international stage. The entire performance was accompanied by live music, adding to the grandeur and creating a warm, engaging atmosphere.

The event was more than a ballet showcase; it was a true celebration of cultural exchange and the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Denmark.
