"HAPPY TO CONNECT" ART EXHIBITION: EXPLORING MATERIALS AND MEANINGS AT ROH GALLERY JAKARTA
Experience an exploration through sculptures that delve into human experience, memory, and reimagined forms
ROH Projects, a contemporary art gallery in Jakarta, proudly presents Happy to Connect, a collaborative exhibition by two acclaimed Southeast Asian artists: Dusadee Huntrakul (born 1978, Bangkok) and Faisal Habibi (born 1984, Jakarta). Open to the public from April 30 to May 25, 2025, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the interplay of creativity, material transformation, and human connection through sculpture and installation.
Faisal Habibi’s artworks originate from discarded materials he finds around his home and studio in Bali. Repurposing remnants from the island’s tourism economy, he reconstructs these everyday leftovers into layered, sculptural forms. Through melting, reshaping, and reassembling, Faisal breathes new life into what was once waste—producing visually compelling pieces that reflect broader themes of collective change and adaptation. His process serves as a commentary on the constantly shifting dynamics of human life.
In contrast, Dusadee Huntrakul’s practice is rooted in symbolism and intergenerational memory. His intricate brass sculptures feature imaginative figures—a two-headed gecko as a spiritual guide, an egg delicately balanced on fingers symbolizing hope, and chicken feet transformed into ancestral necklaces. Together, these elements form a visually rich and deeply spiritual landscape. Dusadee also includes drawings by his son, Prinn Seeumpornroj Huntrakul, adding an intimate layer of familial connection and emphasizing the beauty found in everyday moments.
Happy to Connect is more than an exhibition—it’s an invitation to reflect on how we relate to the objects and materials that surround us. Through their distinct practices, both artists highlight new possibilities in seemingly forgotten or mundane elements—waste, longing, and life’s inherent contradictions.
Stepping into ROH Projects’ gallery space, visitors are met with an atmosphere of contemplative quiet. The stark grey concrete floor and whitewashed walls serve as a neutral canvas for artworks that speak through shape and symbol. Each piece not only inhabits the space but also sparks imagination—prompting us to reconnect with the world, with one another, and with ourselves.
