DIGITAL NATION MEETS ISLAND ARCHIPELAGO: ESTONIA’S JAKARTA RECEPTION HIGHLIGHTS FUTURE COLLABORATION

It creates abundant opportunities to strengthen relations and unlock new possibilities between two nations with a shared vision

Jakarta once again played host to a significant moment in global digital diplomacy. On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Margus Tsahkna, made an official visit to Indonesia, highlighted by an exclusive reception titled “Digital Nation Meets Island Archipelago,” held at The Langham Ballroom, The Langham Hotel, Jakarta. The event served as a platform for Estonia to present a major opportunity for collaboration between the digitally advanced Baltic nation and Indonesia, a country rich in creative young talent.

The reception was initiated by H.E. Priit Turk, Estonian Ambassador to Indonesia, Singapore, and ASEAN. Attended by prominent diplomats, entrepreneurs, and innovators from both countries, the event brought together ideas, energy, and a shared vision for the future, focusing on building cross-national digital partnerships.

Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, also attended to express his support and emphasize the importance of strengthening existing cooperation. This sentiment was echoed by senior Indonesian diplomat Dino Patti Djalal, who noted that bilateral trade between the two nations had increased by 40 percent in the past year, reaching USD 540 million.

“Estonia may be a small country, but it could become our strategic bridge to Europe,” he remarked.

Estonia is widely recognized as a pioneer in digital governance. Nearly all public services in the country have been digitized, with the exception of marriage. In his speech, Tsahkna highlighted Estonia’s world-class digital infrastructure and introduced the e-Residency program—an initiative that enables anyone in the world to establish and manage a business within the European Union entirely online.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Indonesia’s young entrepreneurs—startup founders, digital creators, and freelancers—to bring their ideas to the international stage,” Tsahkna said.

However, the Estonian delegation's visit was far from symbolic. They arrived with a clear mission: to establish real, two-way partnerships. Minister Tsahkna even announced that Indonesia would soon send a return delegation to Estonia as a follow-up to this collaboration.

Oliver Väärtnõu, Vice Chair of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce, added that several Estonian companies had already started operations in Indonesia, particularly in Bali’s property sector. “We want to connect more deeply with the local digital ecosystem. Indonesia’s market is fast-moving and full of potential. We aim to learn more and contribute more,” he stated.

With the central message “Let’s build the future together,” Estonia invites the young generation of Indonesia to step into a more integrated digital future. For those with global vision and an innovative mindset, this is the moment to turn ideas into reality—and Estonia is ready to be a launching partner.

The future of diplomacy is no longer solely about politics—it is about technology, collaboration, and opportunity. And for Indonesia, that future is already at the door.
