Experience a night of spiritual serenity and unity as thousands of lanterns carry messages of hope and peace to the world

The celebration of Waisak Day 2569 BE/2025 will once again take place at Borobudur Temple, Magelang Regency, this coming May. One of the most anticipated events is the Waisak Lantern Festival, which this year carries the theme “Light of Peace” — a symbol of hope for global harmony.

The Waisak Lantern Festival 2025 will be held in person at the Marga Utama Field and Lumbini Garden within the Borobudur Temple complex on Monday, May 12, 2025. The event is open to Buddhists, the general public, and both domestic and international tourists seeking a profound spiritual experience in a serene setting.

The organizing committee has scheduled two lantern release sessions: the first from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM WIB, and the second from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM WIB. Gate entry for each session will be open from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM WIB and 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM WIB, respectively. All attendees are required to wear modest white clothing and maintain silence throughout the event. Children aged five and above are welcome to participate.

This year, a total of 2,569 lanterns will be released, corresponding to the Buddhist year 2569 BE. These lanterns are specially imported from Thailand and made of environmentally friendly paper that burns completely without leaving waste, in line with the spirit of environmental conservation.

The festival is more than just a lantern release. It begins with the chanting of sacred Buddhist parittas, followed by a Waisak night meditation that fosters a calm and reflective atmosphere. Each participant will also receive a piece of paper to write down their prayers, hopes, and aspirations. These messages will be attached to the lanterns before being released into the night sky, creating a moment rich with meaning and inner peace.

Each lantern release ticket is valid for one person, with the launching conducted in groups of at least four people, assisted by the event staff.

The Waisak Lantern Festival 2025 at Borobudur Temple is not only a spiritual celebration but also a moment of unity and a shared hope for a more peaceful world. Through the theme Light of Peace, the event invites people from all walks of life to engage in reflection, express hope, and unite in the spirit of peace.
