SORE: ISTRI DARI MASA DEPAN BRINGS INDONESIAN CINEMA TO THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE 2026 OSCARS

This film delivers a powerful love story that reaches all the way to the grand stage of the 2026 Oscars

Good news comes from the Indonesian film industry. The film Sore: Wife from the Future has officially been chosen to represent Indonesia at the 98th Academy Awards, also known as the 2026 Oscars. Directed by Yandy Laurens, the film will compete in the Best International Feature Film category, marking an important milestone that highlights the growing presence of Indonesian cinema on the global stage.

The announcement was confirmed by the production house Cerita Films. This romantic drama, starring Dion Wiyoko and Sheila Dara, has captivated audiences since its release in July 2025 and has drawn around 4 million viewers. The decision to select the film was made during a plenary session of the Indonesian Oscar Selection Committee, which is formed annually by the Indonesian Film Producers Association (PPFI) and validated by the Academy Awards.

Indonesia has participated in this category since 1987. So far, 27 films have been submitted as the nation’s representatives, though none have yet secured a nomination. In recent years, notable entries included Perempuan Tanah Jahanam in 2020, Yuni in 2021, and Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap in 2022. The selection of Sore: Wife from the Future continues Indonesia’s efforts to gain recognition at the world’s most prestigious film awards.

The film follows the story of Sore, played by Sheila Dara Aisha, who travels from the future to meet her husband Jonathan, portrayed by Dion Wiyoko, who at that time is still single and living in Croatia. With Jonathan’s health deteriorating in the future, Sore carries a vital mission to change his fate so he can live a longer life. Her efforts, however, bring conflicts between Jonathan’s past, present, and future, leading to serious consequences for both. The story presents not only a romantic drama but also a reflection on life choices and the cost of change.

The selection of Sore: Wife from the Future was made after a careful review of its storytelling, artistic achievements, and international appeal. With its strong reputation at home, the film is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s standing in the global film industry.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, United States, and will be broadcast live worldwide. In Indonesia, the event will air on March 16, 2026, starting at 6 a.m. local time. Other countries have also announced their entries, including Palestine 36 from Palestine, Magellan from the Philippines, A Useful Ghost from Thailand, and No Other Choice from South Korea.

The participation of Sore: Wife from the Future at the 2026 Oscars represents new optimism for Indonesian cinema. Despite the challenges of competing on the world stage, this achievement shows that Indonesian filmmakers are creating works that deserve international recognition.
