JAKARTA INTERNATIONAL PHOTO FESTIVAL 2025 CELEBRATES PHOTOGRAPHY, TECHNOLOGY, AND CREATIVE DIALOGUE
Immersive showcases and engaging discussions exploring humanity’s relationship with technology
Jakarta is currently hosting the Jakarta International Photo Festival (JIPFest) 2025, which began on September 12 and continues until September 21 at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM). As the festival reaches its midpoint, it has drawn widespread attention from the creative community, showcasing the dynamic world of photography and the discussions it inspires.
The fifth edition of JIPFest, themed Coexistence, focuses on the growing presence of technology in everyday life. From the internet and social media to smart devices and artificial intelligence, the festival encourages reflection on how humans can live alongside technology without losing their humanity. Through photo exhibitions, discussions, public lectures, and workshops, visitors are invited to explore these issues critically while considering future possibilities.
This year, the festival features 16 public programs and 41 events, hosting 50 guest artists from Indonesia and abroad. Participants include Kang Jeauk from South Korea, Ian Teh from Malaysia, Ángela Rincón from Colombia, Mai Nguyên Anh from Vietnam, Woong Soak Teng from Singapore, Daisy Yang from Canada/Taiwan, as well as Indonesian photographers such as Budi N.D. Dharmawan, Jerry Aurum, and Narrendra Kameshwara. Interdisciplinary artists including Rendy Pandugo, Cindy Tan, and Handoko Hendroyono bring additional creative perspectives to the festival.
The curatorial team, led by Chelsea Chua, Yoppy Pieter, and Irene Barlian, selected 21 photography and multimedia projects for exhibition at Emiria Soenassa Gallery, TIM. These works feature international artists such as Amina Kadous, Danielle Ezzo, Kadir van Lohuizen, and Nikita Teryoshin, alongside Indonesian talents including Muhammad Fadli, Reza Saifullah, and Rio Surya Prasetia. The collection presents diverse perspectives on social, environmental, cultural, and humanitarian issues.
Beyond the exhibitions, JIPFest serves as a platform for dialogue between photographers and the public. Inspirational discussions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions provide space for new ideas to emerge, allowing students and creative communities to learn directly from experienced practitioners.
Supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, the Central Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office, Jakarta Library, and the HB Jassin Literary Documentation Center, JIPFest has reinforced its status as a photography festival with both local roots and international resonance.
Since its inception in 2019, JIPFest has been a bridge for young Indonesian photographers to connect with stakeholders in photography, media, and the global creative industries. With the theme Coexistence, this edition encourages reflection on the evolving relationship between humans, technology, and visual art.
As the festival continues through the coming weekend, JIPFest 2025 demonstrates that photography is not only about images but also a medium for dialogue, understanding, and celebrating life in an increasingly digital world.
