EVOKING ART AND MEANING: THE RENJANA, RENCANA, WACANA, BENCANA EXHIBITION AT GAJAH GALLERY JAKARTA
A powerful convergence of passion, structure, and dialogue unveils the layered creative journeys of eight Indonesian women artists
Gajah Gallery Jakarta presents a group exhibition that reflects a profound and contemplative artistic journey. Titled Renjana, Rencana, Wacana, Bencana (Desire, Design, Discourse, Disaster), the exhibition brings together eight Indonesian women artists in a shared space of expression—where intuition, structure, and vulnerability converge in the creative process.
The participating artists include Agnes Christina, Agnes Hansella, Betty Adii, Candrani Yulis, Dzikra Afifah, Elia Nurvista, Restu Ratnaningtyas, and Theresia Agustina Sitompul. Through diverse media such as painting, sculpture, installation, textiles, and new media, they present works that explore both personal and collective experiences, challenging the conventional view of the creative process as linear and seamless.
More than a visual showcase, the exhibition offers a deep understanding of the dynamics of artistic creation. Renjana serves as the initial spark—a burst of passion and intent. Rencana provides the structure that shapes and directs the work. Wacana opens space for reflection and discourse, enriching the meanings constructed. Bencana, though seemingly representing collapse, becomes a site for the emergence of new interpretations and perspectives.
Each artwork contributes to a narrative that resists uniformity and defies a singular trajectory. The creative process is revealed as a series of collisions, repetitions, and directional shifts. From the fractures within these processes arises the potential for deeper, more expansive understanding.
With the courage to embrace vulnerability, the artists demonstrate that art is never a neutral entity. It is formed by the histories of the body, memory, heritage, and the constantly shifting realities of society. Through both subtlety and confrontation, this exhibition affirms that art remains an open space for new conversations—even amid destruction.
Renjana, Rencana, Wacana, Bencana is not simply an art exhibition, but a reflection on the complexity of creation and existence. It is an invitation to witness how Indonesian women artists respond to the world through works that are honest, stirring, and deeply empowering.
