EMPOWERING WELLBEING: HIGHLIGHTS FROM BSJ'S SECOND SYMPOSIUM
Experts discussed holistic education, mental health, and sustainability for personal and collective growth
The British School Jakarta (BSJ) recently concluded its second Wellbeing Symposium, a three-day event brimming with connections, growth, and profound insights. Held from Monday to Wednesday, May 27th to 29th, the symposium aimed to champion holistic education and address pertinent issues surrounding wellbeing, mental health, social inclusion, and the sustainability of both humanity and the planet.
At the heart of BSJ's educational ethos lies wellbeing, a multidimensional concept fundamental across ages, cultures, and populations. It revolves around individuals' personal and social well-being and their assessment of life quality.
Featuring esteemed speakers from various fields including wellbeing science, positive psychology, systems thinking, creativity, education, and biophilic design, participants were offered over nine main sessions, sixteen workshops, engaging panel discussions, and ample networking opportunities.
The symposium provided a platform to delve into the core elements shaping our environments, cultures, and educational systems, fostering both personal and collective growth. Participants were encouraged to cultivate environments conducive to growth, cultures that prioritize wellbeing, and learning conditions that empower individuals to thrive.
Recognized as the key to unlocking personal potential, adaptability, resilience, and happiness, wellbeing was thoroughly explored at the symposium. It serves as a vital platform for addressing contemporary issues in positive psychology, aiming to enhance quality of life by studying optimal functioning in individuals, groups, and institutions.
Attendees were urged to adopt data-driven strategies to shape ideal environments, foster inclusive cultures, and facilitate directed learning experiences through expert-led sessions, workshops, and interactive discussions.
Featuring a lineup of renowned speakers such as Robert Biswas Diener, Sue Langley, David Bott, and Jane Drake, the symposium offered deep insights into various wellbeing topics. New additions, including academic Yufi Adriani offering an Indonesian perspective on wellbeing, Professor Lindsay Oades from the University of Melbourne, Biophilic Design Architect Dr. Fiona Gray, and Andrea Downie, Head of Wellbeing BSJ, enriched the discussion with valuable perspectives.
With post-symposium resources and ongoing research initiatives, the Wellbeing Symposium is expected to have a lasting impact, driving tangible change in the global education community. Thus, the event not only serves as a catalyst for personal reflection and growth but also for collective transformation in realizing wellbeing for all.
