CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBITIONS IN JAKARTA: EXPLORING VULNERABILITY, IDENTITY, AND CONNECTION
Kawah Ojol and Pop Fractal offer profound explorations into the dynamics of modern life
Jakarta continues to be a thriving hub for art, featuring numerous captivating exhibitions that attract art enthusiasts. Two noteworthy exhibitions are "Kawah Ojol" by South Korean artist Hyun Nahm at ROH Gallery and "Pop Fractal" at Baik Art Jakarta by Balinese artist Suanjaya Kencut. Both exhibitions present thought-provoking works, inviting visitors to reflect on various social, cultural, and personal issues relevant to contemporary life.
Kawah Ojol: Highlighting the Vulnerability of Contemporary Labor
The exhibition Kawah Ojol by Hyun Nahm, which opened on November 20, 2024, at ROH Gallery, features 12 works spanning various forms, including two-dimensional paintings, three-dimensional sculptures, and impressive installations. These pieces result from Hyun Nahm’s residency in Indonesia from October 2023 to February 2024, during which he explored sites connected to volcanoes, such as Kawah Putih, the Geological Museum, Tangkuban Perahu, Mount Merapi, and Kawah Ijen.
During his travels, Hyun Nahm found inspiration to depict the vulnerability and uncertainty he encountered. One standout piece is "The Mine" (2024), an installation portraying a melting sulfur-like puddle on the floor, adorned with fragments of motorcycle helmets bearing the logos of online ride-hailing companies. This artwork critiques the phenomenon of a ‘new type of mining,’ commodifying human labor.
Another notable work, Puppeteer (Archipelago), captures attention with its depiction of a motorcycle lying on the floor, tied with strings, as if the bike controls various objects at the other ends. This piece speaks to the control and uncertainties of modern life constrained by limitations.
Hyun Nahm also explores everyday objects, such as water barriers commonly used to prevent vehicles from entering opposing lanes. In Erupted (2024), these barriers appear to melt as if exposed to magma, losing their original function. This work symbolizes the fragility of systems and the uncertainties present in contemporary society. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the realities of life’s vulnerabilities and constant changes. It runs at ROH Gallery, Jl. Surabaya No. 66, Gondangdia, Menteng, Central Jakarta, until January 5, 2025.
Pop Fractal: Reflecting on Identity and Interconnection in a Fragmented World
Meanwhile, the exhibition Pop Fractal by Suanjaya Kencut, which opened on November 14, 2024, at Baik Art Jakarta, offers a profound visual experience on the interconnections of identity, emotions, and symbolism in an increasingly fragmented world. Kencut invites visitors to contemplate the interconnectedness of identities within a society that grows increasingly divided.
Kencut is renowned for his unique visual style that combines Balinese cultural elements such as ornamental carvings, decorative fabrics, and symbols from traditional ceremonies and Barong-Rangda dances. He uses recurring doll-like symbols in dynamic compositions, both in two-dimensional paintings and sculptures. In this exhibition, Kencut delves into modern life filled with fragments and emotions that are challenging to fully express. His works depict a world where social interactions are often dominated by symbols that no longer hold clear meaning, representing the disconnection between individuals.
This exhibition also reflects Kencut’s effort to unify these small fragments and rediscover the meaning of interconnection often lost in busy and fragmented lives. Using vibrant colors and layered patterns, Kencut successfully merges Balinese traditions with modern interpretations, presenting a dialogue between the past, present, and future. Visitors are encouraged to reconsider their relationships with cultural identity and contemporary realities. Pop Fractal remains open until January 11, 2025, at Baik Art Jakarta, making it an excellent weekend or holiday activity.
Both exhibitions offer differing yet complementary perspectives on highlighting critical issues in modern life. These exhibitions provide valuable reflective spaces for visitors to better understand today’s societal challenges, inviting them to ponder the meanings of connection and vulnerability in daily life. The works displayed at ROH Gallery and Baik Art Jakarta serve not only as art pieces but also as tools to touch our hearts and minds, encouraging a more critical and reflective view of the world.
