CELEBRATING KING'S DAY OF BELGIUM: A TRIBUTE TO CULTURAL HARMONY AND DIPLOMATIC STRENGTH
A reflection of the strong and lasting bond between Belgium and Indonesia over 75 years
November 15th is a special day for the Royal Family of Belgium. This date has been marked since 1866 as a celebration day in honor of the King of the Belgians. On November 14, 2024, at Ayana Midplaza Jakarta, The Ambassador of H.R.H. King Philippe of the Belgians, Frank Felix and Çiğdem Bagcı Felix hosted a wonderful reception in honor of King’s Day. Guests of honor, including prominent figures such as Saleh Husin, Jusuf Kalla, and Rosan Roeslani, attended the celebration as VIPs. With the theme of cultural diversity, the event featured a choir and musical performances that created a warm and harmonious atmosphere among guests from various backgrounds.
One of the highlights of the celebration was Belgium's recognition of Indonesia's rich cultural heritage. As part of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Belgium adorned the iconic Manneken Pis statue in Brussels with traditional Lampung attire, Tulang Bawang.
The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, who attended the event, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations. “Cultural exchange is a vital foundation that enhances diplomatic relations and fosters mutual respect between Belgium and Indonesia,” said Satryo. Satryo also mentioned Indonesia's participation as the guest country at the Europalia Arts Festival in 2017-2018. Over 500 Indonesian artists participated in the festival, held in Belgium and other European countries, showcasing the excellence of Indonesian art and culture on the international stage.
In his speech, Ambassador Frank Felix reflected on the long-standing history of relations between the two countries, which began when Belgium became one of the first European nations to recognize Indonesia's sovereignty in 1949. This was marked by the establishment of diplomatic missions in both Jakarta and Brussels. “For 75 years, the relationship between Indonesia and Belgium has developed rapidly. High-level visits, such as President Joko Widodo’s visit to Brussels and President Suharto’s state visit to Belgium in 1972, have been significant milestones in strengthening this partnership,” said Felix.
He also expressed appreciation for the partnership in various sectors, including economy, education, and social affairs, which continue to thrive alongside changes in government in both countries. “We are very much looking forward to closer cooperation with the new Indonesian administration, as Belgian entrepreneurs, experts, and communities are eager to engage with Indonesia,” he added.
The King’s Day celebration not only served as an occasion to honor the Belgian King’s birthday but also as a moment of reflection on the decades-long diplomatic relationship. Through events like this, Belgium and Indonesia continue to demonstrate their commitment to enhancing cooperation in various fields, including culture, economy, and people-to-people ties, for a shared future.
