AHMAD SADALI CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION: TRACING THE EARTH, REACHING THE SKY AT SELASAR SUNARYO ART SPACE
Bringing Indonesia’s abstract maestro’s legacy to life in a mesmerizing and meaningful experience
Selasar Sunaryo Art Space (SSAS) in Bandung presents Seabad Sadali: Menjejak Bumi Menembus Langit, an exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ahmad Sadali, widely recognized as the Father of Indonesian Abstract Painting. The exhibition showcases his artworks and personal collections, spread across three gallery spaces at SSAS. Initially set to run until January 2025, it has now been extended until April 20, 2025, at Bale Tonggoh SSAS, located on Jl. Bukit Pakar Timur No. 100, Ciburial, Cimenyan District, Bandung Regency. Curated by Heru Hikayat and Puja Anindita, the exhibition offers a deep reflection on Sadali’s artistic journey and intellectual contributions.
The Legacy of an Abstract Art Maestro
Born in Garut on July 24, 1924, Ahmad Sadali developed an early passion for art. His talent in drawing led him to study at the Faculty of Art Education within the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia—now known as the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). After graduating in 1953, he became a lecturer at his alma mater and played a key role in shaping modern Indonesian art.
Sadali was renowned for his signature style, which blended cubism, abstraction, and Islamic calligraphy. His artistic vision was influenced by Ries Mulder, a Dutch painter who taught in Bandung. Beyond his work as an artist, Sadali was also an academic and intellectual actively engaged in various Islamic organizations.
A Journey Through the Exhibition
The Seabad Sadali exhibition is designed to highlight and revive the works and ideas of this artistic maestro. Gallery B (Lower) features his cubist, abstract, and Islamic calligraphy paintings. The Wing Gallery displays his early sketches and drawings, showcasing his artistic evolution. Meanwhile, the Bale Tonggoh Room presents his personal belongings, writings, and lectures, offering visitors a deeper insight into the man behind the canvas.
Collaboration and Tribute
This exhibition is made possible through a collaboration between SSAS and Paragon, initiated by a meeting at the ITB Class of 1997 reunion between Syagini Ratna Wulan, Head of Development at the Selasar Sunaryo Foundation, and Harman Subakat, Group CEO of Paragon Universa Utama. This partnership honors Ahmad Sadali’s artistic legacy and his significant contributions to Indonesian fine art.
Seabad Sadali: Menjejak Bumi Menembus Langit is not just a tribute to a legendary figure but also an inspiration for future generations to explore abstract art and the spirituality embedded within it.
